This event has been postponed until the fall and registration will reopen when a new date is confirmed. Thank you for your interest!

Capital Region Land Conservancy is excited to partner with the Richmond Audubon Society for a morning of birding at the Varina LandLab, which is located next to Henrico County’s Deep Bottom Park. Leading our nature walk will be Matt Brooks, Field Trip Chair of the Richmond Audubon Society, as well as President of the Pocahontas Chapter of the Virginia Native Plant Society.

ABOUT THE RICHMONDN AUDUBON SOCIETY

Richmond Audubon Society (RAS) was established in 1973, and is a chapter of the National Audubon Society (NAS). RAS is dedicated to the observation and conservation of birds and other wildlife. Our members participate in local conservation efforts, habitat restoration, and monitoring of applicable legislation. We have over 1,400 members throughout Central Virginia, made up of a diverse group of people from various backgrounds, interests and birding experience levels.

ABOUT THE EVENT

This is an easy-level casual hike along wide gravel trails throughout the Varina LandLab property where attendees will learn how to locate birds by sound and sight, how to use binoculars effectively, about bird identification apps, and what common birds are found in the Richmond region. Through a generous donation by the Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources, CRLC has ten pair of binoculars available for attendees to borrow if you don’t have your own to bring.

Participants are advised to wear sun protection and comfortable, sturdy hiking shoes/boots as the trails can be uneven and muddy with recent rains. Bring water, plus a light snack if desired.

LOCATION

Varina LandLab – Entrance #2 9051 Deep Bottom Road, Richmond, VA 23231

ABOUT THE VARINA LANDLAB

The 353-acre Varina LandLab is located in eastern Henrico County adjacent to Deep Bottom Park and fronts the James River, Four Mile Creek, and Roundabout Creek. It was gifted to CRLC in 2021 to support public access to the outdoors and environmental education opportunities. The property has been permanently protected since 2017 by a conservation easement co-held by CRLC and the Henricopolis Soil and Water Conservation District. It is dubbed a “LandLab” for its purpose as an outdoor classroom for local K-12 students, University classes, and curious minds of all ages. The biodiversity that can be found at Varina LandLab is extraordinary and offers an opportunity to learn about ecology, sustainability, and effective land management.
