2026 Guided Hikes: Brown & Williamson Conservation Area
March 9 @ 2:00 pm - 5:00 pm
$15
Kick off the hike season with CRLC and Chesterfield County Parks & Rec on Monday, March 9 as we visit the Brown & Williamson Conservation Area in Chesterfield County, Virginia. Led by Naturalist, Mark Battista, and CRLC Land Stewardship Manager, Ashley Moulton, this hike is the only public opportunity to visit this protected land.
ABOUT THE SITE
Brown and Williamson Conservation Area is along the James River in Chesterfield County and encompasses 262-acres of forest and diverse terrain that provides prime foraging habitat for bald eagles and contains a 20-acre lake which provides critical habitat for migratory waterfowl. The landscape is a mixture of mature upland forest, steep slopes, slow-flowing stream bottom land, geological intrigue, and stable bluffs overlooking the river.
ABOUT THE HIKE
The hike covers a varied terrain of easy to moderate depending on skill level and will consist of a nearly 3-mile amble learning about the history of the property and the geological aspects, and we will of course be on the lookout for eagles! There are no trails so participants should be comfortable walking on uneven terrain including navigating steep elevations. Participants should wear comfortable, sturdy hiking shoes or boots and be prepared to cross a slow-moving steam and navigate hills. Hiking poles will be handy if you have them. Don’t forget to bring water, as well as a light snack if desired.
ABOUT THE GUIDES:
Mark Battista is a naturalist with extensive experience following tenure with the Chesterfield County Parks & Recreation and Virginia State Parks. He is currently semi-retired.
Ashley Moulton has 14 years of experience in ecological restoration and natural resource management in Virginia. She completed both her BS and MS in Biology at Virginia Commonwealth University with a focus on Plant Ecology and a minor in Urban and Regional Studies and Ecological Restoration from the University of Minnesota.
