Guided Hike: Atkins Acres Community Park

February 18, 2022 @ 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm

$5 – $15

Join us on Monday, February 7th to learn about the natural features of Atkins Acres Community Park through a guided hike led by Chesterfield County Naturalist, Mark Battista, and CRLC Land Conservation Manager, Jane Myers.

Purchase your ticket here.

ABOUT THE AREA

Atkins Acres Community Park is a 109-acre parcel of land that was gifted in 2011 to Chesterfield County for a future park which has not yet been built. Capital Region Land Conservancy worked with the landowner, Anna Atkins, prior to her death and then with her Trustees to fulfill her wishes that the property never be developed into houses but ultimately become a public park.

The land is primarily a mixed pine/hardwood forest with two sandy bottomed streams which flow through the property. Mrs. Atkins and her husband Paul built their modest 1,000 sf home on the property in 1950 and lived off the land much like homesteaders. Today the property is surrounded on the east and west by residential development and Route 288 to the south.

ABOUT THE HIKE

The hike will consist of an approximately 2 to 3 mile amble through and around the property. There are no trails so participants must be very comfortable on uneven terrain in flat and hilly woods. There is also a small, slow-moving stream across the property that participants should be comfortable crossing. Participants should wear comfortable, sturdy hiking shoes or boots and bring water and a light snack if desired.

CRLC will conduct the annual monitoring of the property while co-hosting a public hike with Mark Battista, Chesterfield County’s naturalist.

COVID-19 PRECAUTIONS

To ensure everyone’s safety, headcount for all CRLC hikes is limited to 8 participants, not including our two guides. We will be observing strict social distancing norms throughout all portions of the hike. Even though will be outdoors, we request that participants have masks or face coverings on their person, since we will be hiking in a line for portions of the time.

DETAILS & TICKETS

We will meet at the Southwest Church of Christ 5340 Courthouse Rd, Chesterfield, VA 23832 in the parking lot at the back of the church. Meet at 12:45 and prepare to depart walking from the church which is adjacent to the property promptly at 1:00. We will return to the parking lot by 4:00.
