Join Capital Region Land Conservancy on Tuesday, May 7 from 5:00pm-7:0pm for a special evening hike at CRLC’s Varina LandLab! We’ll discover the wildflowers, tranquil grasses and pines along Four Mile Creek and enjoy the sun set over this tranquil terrain. The Varina LandLab Guided Hike will be led by CRLC Land Stewardship Manager, Ashley Moulton, and Meegan Walace, Plant Walk Coordinator for the Pocahontas Chapter of the Virginia Native Plant Society.
ABOUT THE AREA
CRLC’s Varina LandLab consists of 353 acres on Deep Bottom Road. The property was gifted to CRLC in 2021 to support public access to the outdoors and environmental education opportunities. It has been permanently protected since 2017 by a conservation easement co-held by CRLC and the Henricopolis Soil and Water Conservation District. Dedicated for public access, trails are open daily, dawn to dusk. The Varina LandLab is located in eastern Henrico County adjacent to Deep Bottom Park and fronts the James River, Four Mile Creek, and Roundabout Creek. It is dubbed a “LandLab” for its purpose as an outdoor classroom for local K-12 students, University classes, and curious minds of all ages.
ABOUT THE HIKE
The hike at Varina LandLab is an easy-level hike that will consist of exploring the wildflower meadow and the Loop Trail over an approximately 2 mile trail. We’ll learn about the wealth of wildflowers on the land, a conserved riparian buffer along Four Mile Creek, and the natural outcomes of a recent managed burn in 2023. In partnership with the Pocahontas Chapter of the Virginia Native Plant Society, our guided hike will be led by Ashley Moulton, CRLC Land Stewardship Manager, and Meegan Walace, Plant Hike Coordinator with VNPS.
Participants are advised to wear comfortable, sturdy hiking shoes/boots, sun protection, bug spray and bring water, plus a light snack if desired.
