Team Fields Webinar: Battlefields and Biodiversity

October 5, 2021 @ 3:00 pm - 4:00 pm

Battlefields and Biodiversity discussion graphic

Parker Agelasto Director of the Capital Region Land Conservancy discusses with University of Richmond Professors Todd Lookingbill and Peter Smallwood, co-editors and authors of Collateral Values: The Natural Capital Created by Landscapes of War, how the preservation of Virginia’s Historic Military Battlefields has provided unexpected conservation benefits to the Richmond region. While war is devastating to people and landscapes, sometimes unanticipated benefits may arise after wars and conflicts. The preservation of battlefields and the protection of borderlands can create natural capital. These lands can host biodiversity, provide ecosystem services, and open space for humans.

This discussion was co-sponsored by the University of Richmond’s Global Environmental Speaker Series and the Capital Region Land Conservancy’s 2021 Conservation Games.
