The next time you’re out at the Varina LandLab, you may notice some changes. CRLC is working on exciting improvements to the conservation area to improve public access, restore habitat, and protect water quality in Roundabout Creek.
New Trail off of Roundabout Loop
We’re excited to share that a new 1,100-foot east-to-west trail has been created off of the Roundabout Loop Trail off Trailhead 2. (pictured) This addition will improve access for the public, volunteers, and researchers with Virginia Commonwealth University that visit the area west of Deep Bottom Road.
Invasive Privet Treatment
We are also targeting removal of invasive privet within the riparian buffer area along the banks of Roundabout Creek.This work will help protect and enhance native vegetation and is in preparation of a future tree planting.
Upcoming Prescribed Burn
By October 1, CRLC will be burning 100 acres at the Varina LandLab, mostly between Trailheads #1 and #2. Goals of the burn will improve wildlife habitat, reduce tick populations, and help us continue to manage the property to promote a pine savannah habitat. Due to weather dependence, our professional burn team will provide short notice to begin the work. Follow us for trail closures and updates about the burn.
Native Trees Planting
Thanks to a grant awarded by the Virginia Department of Forestry’s Trees for Clean Water program, CRLC will be planting 500 native hardwood trees along Roundabout Creek to help reduce erosion, improve watershed health, and strengthen wildlife habitat. The planting is scheduled to be completed in 2027.
Varina LandLab Conservation Area is located in eastern Henrico just off Route 5 (New Market Road) and the Virginia Capital Trail and is open daily from dawn to dusk. A suggested $5 donation per visitor helps supports stewardship and restoration at the property.
